Clever Little Squirrel

by Joseph J. Biernacki

Our furry little friends will stop at nothing to secure a snack and in doing so they reveal their genius.  Their acrobatics and solutions seem like a written play of skill and choice.

It thought before

It made its way

To move to B from A,

To reach a treat

Not meant for it

But for some feath’ry jay.

From ground to trunk,

From trunk to limb,

And limb to old, shed trim,

Then trim to roof,

And roof to post,

And post to downspout rim,

From rim to whips,

On willow’s crown,

Then through the air, kerplunk,

…

An awkward land,

But quite well planned,

It scared away a bird.

With feast at hand,

And vigor then,

It ate, with squabbling heard.
